Dendrochilum latifolium is one of the big ones at about half a metre high and with spectacular spikes over 30 cm long. It is very impressive and easily produces numerous racemes that last for several weeks. After flowering, the large bracts at the back of the flower remain and dry off, giving the flower an ongoing display - albeit, not as spectacular as the flowers.
It needs warm, humid conditions and plenty of watering. It should be grown in good quality, fresh sphagnum moss and not allowed to get waterlogged.
Negatives: Can't be grown in cool areas without a heated glasshouse or total protection from frosts.
Rating: ♦♦♦♦♦ It is easy to obtain and very rewarding.
